Hello Mojo has created a vending solution featuring huge touchscreens. We developed the user interface for the touch screen, but the challenge was to control the vending machine. For this we commissioned and developed an interface board for communication between the user interface and the vending machine controller. Now when you click the Coke on the screen and put your money in, your Coke comes out!

GS++ was designed to replace a legacy system, GS, and allows VW buyers to source quotes for new parts, and to place orders with suppliers. eTrack is a new system designed to track engineering changes, and the two year process from conceptualisation, design and approval of a new part, through procurement, to testing and eventual incorporation into the production line.

The reading programme demo was developed as a proof of concept for a UK publishing company. The project is not complete, so we're keeping full details under our hats. The idea is to provide online games and activities based around a series of hard copy books designed for use in literacy teaching in the first three years of school. Learners can also read the books online, with turning pages and audio.

Speak Naturally and Continuously was conceptualised and project managed by Matt, including hardware sourcing and installation. Alchemy was approached to write the software that translates the voice data from the microphones into text, and interfaces with the various hardware components, such as microphones and large format LED screen.

idu has created budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting software that is used around the world. We did some consulting to them on SQL query optimisation, including handover to and training of their internal development team. Queries that originally had taken over 2 minutes were optimised down to around 7 seconds.

Shell Petroleum Development Company in Nigeria was rewriting an old application in .NET. Modules included corporate aviation, accommodation, fuel and fleet management, land and marine transport, and rotary wing aviation. We spent some time in Nigeria as Microsoft Consultants helping them plan their analysis of the system, and architecting it. We worked closely with their 30-odd strong development team, and continued to support their developers for some months after the engagement.

Global Telematics is in the business of Fleet Management and Vehicle Tracking. We wrote an in-house system, TIBS, for them, to control the process of installation of new tracking units, including customer creation and quoting, SIM-card management, installation scheduling and testing. TIBS is a web application, and after project completion we supported it operationally for some years, as well as creating enhancements and assisting their internal developers with new features.

MAPPING ENGINE
To support the Thales Group's vehicle tracking operations, we created a mapping engine that could draw maps within a web page or a Windows application. The system comprised a map database, where users could add, remove and edit layers dynamically; a map server that allowed clients to connect to it and request maps; and the map client - an ActiveX control that runs in a browser or a Windows app.

Nouveau Technologies aquired tracking units from Global Telematics, and supplied them to vehicle dealers for installation with new vehicle sales. They required integration with the existing Global Telematics systems in terms of orders and stock control, and then creation of their own system to manage their dealer network, including installation and testing of the units, and invoicing.

Atio Corporation supplies Call Centre solutions. We worked on a number of customisations for their clients, setting up new workflow processes for various call campaigns. These worksflows integrate with the call dialler and voice recording modules, and provide the call centre operators with "scripts" to follow during incoming and outgoing call campaigns.

REPORTING ENGINE
Definity Telecom is an alternative telecommunications provider. They had an existing billing system running of a SQL database, and provided customers with PDF invoices. We assisted them with analysis for a new Customer Zone, with customer self-service features, and architected a reporting solution based on MS Reporting Services. The engagement included mentoring of internal development resources, and training in implementation of new reports.

Truworths Point of Sales terminals were using a legacy COBOL component to communicate to their headoffice. There were often communication problems when network conditions were bad, sometimes causing the POS terminals to hang indefinitely. Alchemy designed and wrote a robust TCP/IP API wrapper using C++ as a replacement for this component.

WORKFLOW APPLICATION (WEB)
We created a web-based workflow application to report and resolve faults in the Access Control systems at Parliament in Cape Town. Users could report faults in specific pieces of equipment, for example a turnstile, and the fault would be assigned to a technician for investigation and resolution. Tracking of total downtime and turnaround times formed an important part of the system.
